- "We seek the truth and will endure the consequences."
- —Harbinger[src]
The Harbinger is a high-ranking and powerful enforcer and representative of the High Table whose role is to oversee the rules and customs of the High Table and the criminal underworld, and settle disputes and hostilities between members of the Table. He was tasked with carrying out the orders of Vincent Bisset de Gramont and oversaw the duel between John Wick and Caine. Multiple harbingers exist as Charon is seen telling the manager a harbinger has arrived.
Biography[]
John Wick: Chapter 4[]
The Harbinger's warning to the New York Continental
- "There is no mistake. By the order of the Marquis, Vincent Bisset de Gramont, this hotel has been condemned."
- —The Harbinger to Winston Scott
Following the death of the Elder by John Wick, the Harbinger arrived at the New York Continental Hotel with a decree from Vincent Bisset de Gramont condemning the hotel on behalf of the High Table. The Harbinger ordered Winston Scott to report to Vincent and gave Winston and Charon one hour to evacuate the hotel before its destruction.
Following the events at the Osaka Continental, the Harbinger visited Vincent and questioned his tactics in destroying Continentals and how it's getting him closer to killing John. Vincent explained that his campaign wasn't to kill John, but to kill the very idea of John and destroy everything that the idea touches to do that. The Harbinger argued that the bloodshed in Osaka was unnecessary, but Vincent tells him that the bloodshed was the point, and the Harbinger departs.
After John challenged Vincent to a duel for his freedom from the High Table, the Harbinger oversaw their meeting in Paris to set the parameters of the duel and agrees on behalf of the High Table that, should he win, John will be free of all obligations to the High Table while the New York Continental will be rebuilt and reconsecrated with Winston reinstated as manager. However, the Harbinger warned that should Vincent win, both John and Winston's lives would be forfeit.
In the hours leading up to the duel, the Harbinger met with Vincent again, displeased with how he's handled the situation. The Harbinger warned that Vincent losing the duel will shake the foundation of the High Table and turn John into a saint, but Vincent was convinced that he would win. Before departing, the Harbinger warned Vincent to remember that a man's ambition should never exceed his worth.
The Harbinger hosting the duel
With the duel approaching, the Harbinger, his attendants, Vincent, and Winston gather in front of the church awaiting John's arrival. Listening to the sounds of fighting nearby, the Harbinger prepared a revolver, presumably to kill Winston with, as he noted that it appears that John won't make it on time. However, with the help of Caine and Mr. Nobody, John makes it just in time. The Harbinger oversaw the duel, giving John and Caine instructions between rounds and allowing Vincent to substitute himself in for Caine in the final round to administer the coup de grace. However, having deliberately chosen not to fire his gun in the previous round, John shot Vincent in the head as he approached, killing him and winning the duel.
With John having won, the Harbinger announced that John's obligation to the High Table was satisfied, and he is free. Turning to Caine, the Harbinger promised that Caine and his daughter are free of the High Table as well while Winston will be fully reinstated, and all of his terms fulfilled. Declaring that their business is now concluded, the Harbinger departed.
Personality[]
The Harbinger with The Marquis in an equestrian stable
- "A man's ambition should never exceed his worth. You would do well to remember that, sir."
- —Harbinger to the Marquis de Gramont[src]
The Harbinger is mostly shown to be a calm and stern figure who upholds the rules of The High Table. However, he was shown to disagree with the Marquis Vincent de Gramont's methods, going so far as to tell him off on multiple occasions and warn Vincent to not let his ambition exceed his worth.
The Harbinger expressed concern that John Wick winning the duel would shake the foundation of the High Table and make John a saint. However, despite his obvious reservations, he proved to be a man of his word, granting John his freedom and fulfilling Winston's terms as well. The Harbinger even goes so far as to promise Caine and his daughter freedom from the High Table as well despite Caine losing the duel.
Abilities[]
- Skilled Marksman: The Harbinger was skilled with a revolver, as he was prepared to execute Winston if John Wick failed to arrive at the Sacré-Cœur at sunrise.
- "I commend your souls to God. We begin as we end. Ashes to ashes, dust to dust."
- —Harbinger[src]
- Bilingualism: The Harbinger speaks English and Latin.
Equipment[]
- "Just so. Now, if there is nothing more, gentlemen, I will see you at sunrise. Failure to meet at the appointed hour will result in forfeiture and immediate execution."
- —Harbinger[src]
- Smith & Wesson Model 327: The Harbinger is seen loading a Smith & Wesson Model 327 before the Sacré-Cœur duel, presumably to kill Winston if John Wick did not arrive before sunrise.
- Thompson Center Arms Encore: The Harbinger provided dueling pistols at Sacré-Cœur.
Trivia[]
- Much like The Adjudicator before him, the Harbinger appears to be one of at least several individuals with the title as Charon refers to him as "a Harbinger" when informing Winston of his arrival similar to how the Adjudicator identified herself as "an Adjudicator."
- His title presumably refers to how his job is to be the bearer of bad news for the High Table and to oversee duels, as in a Harbinger of Death.
- Similar to John Wick, the Harbinger is missing his left ring finger. This may indicate that he may have fallen out of favor with the High Table in the past and had to perform a sacrifice by severing his finger to pledge his fealty to the table.
- Clancy Brown also voices Mr. Krabs from SpongeBob. Ian McShane guest-starred on the show as the viking Gordon, and Keanu Reeves appeared in a supporting role in the third movie based on the series, The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run, as Sage.
