Charon often interacted with John Wick in his position as the concierge of the hotel, offering John various services, such as taking care of his dog. As concierge of the New York Continental, Charon is both the face of the hotel and the guard at its gates.

History[]

"Welcome to the Continental, How may I help you?"
—Charon

Origins and early life[]

The Continental: From the World of John Wick[]

A young Charon works for Cormac O'Connor in the 1970s and it's revealed that he hopes to bring his father over to America from Nigeria. Despite initially being on Cormac's side, Charon later sides with Winston Scott which he later reveals is because Winston's brother Frankie was his friend and the only person who treated Charon well. Charon helps Winston to take control of the Continental Hotel and Winston sets him free to find his father. However, Charon chooses to stay on at the Continental with Winston instead.

Not much further is known about Charon's life, but in the prequel comic series, John and Charon are old acquaintances, and John is on a mission to kill a gang (who were responsible for destroying John's hometown and murdering fifty civilians). While in his room, Charon sees John on the opposite side, but is held at gunpoint by assassins who suddenly burst into his place. John does not hesitate to jump through and save his life, killing everyone else. As gratitude, Charon tells John he owes him a life debt, and will give him assistance whenever he needs it.

Prior to the events of the first film, Charon and Winston were held hostage by Hex, a mysterious man who was rebelling against The High Table, which forced John to help save them.

John Wick[]

Charon's first meet with John after his long retirement.

Charon is first seen greeting John after he comes out of retirement, and gives him a warm welcome. After giving Ms. Perkins her room keycard, he does the same for John. Charon later appeared when John, wounded, asked for a doctor, but tells John laundry service is not as good, offering bourbon instead.

Later, Charon received "a number of grievances" on John's floor from other hotel guests calling to complain about the noise as he fought Ms. Perkins, but John replied he dealt with the "uninvited guest".

He was last seen giving John new car keys from the management team as "compensation for last night's unfortunate incident", as John checked out to hunt down Viggo Tarasov.

John Wick: Chapter 2[]

Charon: The manager is always in."

After John left his dog behind again for his mission, Charon admitted that the hotel has no services for taking care of a dog, but he would do it personally for John.

He later encountered Santino D'Antonio, who is looking for Winston, but is told by Charon to wait in the lounge, followed by John asking for Santino's whereabouts.

After John finally killed D'Antonio, Charon returned the dog to him and states that he enjoyed looking after him. He escorted John at his former house to a meeting with Winston in Central Park and before saying their goodbyes, as Charon tells John that it has been a pleasure working with him as they shake hands.

John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum[]

After John is declared "excommunicado" and forced to go on the run for his unauthorized killing of Santino on Continental grounds, Charon expressed hope that John found sanctuary and smiles slightly when Winston expressed confidence in his abilities.

Later, just as John was about to be killed by Zero, Charon stopped him, reminding Zero that although John was excommunicated and can't reap the sanctuary benefits of The Continental, Zero was still a member and must abide by its rules and cannot kill anyone, even the excommunicated John, without becoming excommunicated himself. Charon fought alongside John when a strike team from the High Table attacked the Continental, which was "deconsecrated" on the orders of The Adjudicator. Together, the men eliminated the High Table soldiers after a hard-fought battle and Charon rejoined Winston to act as his bodyguard when Winston negotiated with the Adjudicator.

After Winston apparently "betrayed" John to regain control of the hotel by shooting him and sending him off the hotel roof, Charon complimented his boss on the move being "well played", seeming to be out of character.

After the death of the Elder by the hands of John in Morocco, the High Table sent one of their enforcers to the NY Continental, the Harbinger. His was sent to informed the status of the Continental and to call Charon and Winston's presence by Vincent Bisset de Gramont. Charon was first seen confronting the Harbinger in the hotel's reception. When the Harbinger leaves, Charon accompanied Winston to face the Marquis. Few moments later after their meet with the Marquis, Charon was executed by Vincent for Winston's failure to kill John.

Charon was buried at Franklin D. Roosevelt Four Freedoms State Park on Roosevelt Island, with his tombstone reading "Vivamus, Moriendum Est."[1] and "Amicum Meus"[2] as chosen by Winston. Sometime later at his gravesite, he was mourned by the vengeful Winston, who later advised John to challenge Vincent to a duel for his freedom. Later, Winston tells John that while he was choosing Charon's epitaph, he went with "Friend" because that was what Charon truly was to him. In return, John expresses his sincere condolences over Charon's loss. Charon's murder is later avenged when John killed Vincent in their duel.

Charon having a call

Charon is man clad in an air of mystery. Most of the time calm and collected, Charon performs his duties as a concierge of hotel professionally and thoroughly and becomes agitated when somebody does not follow the rules of Continental. Most significant he is absolutely loyal to Winston whose orders he fulfill to the letter to the point where Winston call him pride of the hotel. He also deeply respects John (a fair bit more than what Winston does), as seen that he was willing to look after his dog while he was out of the country, even though it was against Continental rules, and enjoyed having the company of his pet. Before John was about to be hunted by every assassin in the world, Charon tells him that it was a genuine pleasure to know and work with John. However, when Winston shoots John off the roof, he doesn't seem very disappointed to see his good friend almost die, although he likely knows that Winston purposefully faked John's death.

Despite the danger that it placed him in, Charon insisted upon accompanying Winston to confront the Marquis Vincent de Gramont even though it was no longer his duty. Charon bravely stood up for Winston to Vincent, leading to his death. Charon's death enraged Winston to the point of vengeance as he was a true friend to Winston, something that Winston openly acknowledged, even putting "Friend" in the epitaph on Charon's gravestone as a result. Despite their outwardly more professional relationship, John also saw Charon as a friend and expressed his sincere condolences to Winston over Charon's loss when they met again for the first time since Winston nearly killed John. John later avenges Charon's murder when he kills Vincent in a duel. Elegant and obliging as he may be, there is no question that Charon is as dangerous as any of The Continental’s guests.

"It's been a pleasure, Mr. Wick. Goodbye."
—Charon to John

Abilities[]

"I know you'll do the Continental proud."
Winston to Charon[src]
  • Expert Marksman: Charon is proficient with pistols and shotguns. During the Continental shootout, he was able to take down several armored hostiles with ease, even improvising his shotgun as a melee weapon. Charon is highly acquainted with various weapons and ammunition, as he recommended the types of ammunition for John to wield and the latter trusted his judgment.
  • Hotel Management: Charon has presumably worked at the Continental for many years as a receptionist, and is efficient in dealing with check-in room services, laundry services, parking and more. His contribution to the hotel has garnered the many likes/support of John and Winston themselves.

Equipment[]

Weapons[]

CharonP30L

  • Heckler & Koch P30L: Charon's sidearm is a Heckler & Koch P30L, just like John Wick. He used it against The High Table's finest guards during the shootout in the Continental Hotel.
  • Taran Tactical STI 2011 Combat Master: Charon gave this pistol to Wick in preparation of the shootout in the Continental Hotel and suggested he dual-wield it with the 9mm major. He also supplied him with 125 grain bullets which travel at 1,425 feet per second, describing them as "serious business."
  • Benelli M4 super 90: In need of more firepower to combat the guards' armor improvements, Charon and Wick returned to the Continental Hotel armory during the shootout and grabbed shotguns. They loaded their shotguns with armor-piercing, 12-gauge steel slugs. He also used the shotgun as a melee weapon during the battle knocking one of the units of High Table with expert on weapons two strikes.

Trivia[]

  • The character's alias is taken from Charon of the Greek mythology; also known as Kharon, he is the ferryman of the underworld, transferring newly deceased souls across the Styx River.
    • A coin was used as a form of currency for Charon's services. In the John Wick setting, golden coins are a recurring motif and plot element used within and outside the Continental Hotel's business.
    • In the Percy Jackson and the Olympians TV show, Lance Reddick played Zeus, the king of the Greek gods. Much like John Wick: Chapter 4, the episode with Lance Reddick was released posthumously and it was also dedicated in his honor.
  • Charon's appearance in John Wick: Chapter 4 is one of Lance Reddick's final film roles as Lance died shortly before the movie was released of natural causes. As a result, he received a tribute in the movie's end credits.
