John Wick: Chapter 2[]

Recruiting John Wick[]

"Be seeing you. John Wick."
"Not if I see you first."
—Ares and John Wick[src]

Ares accompanied Santino D'Antonio when he went to the residence of legendary hitman John Wick to hire Wick for a mission to fulfill the blood oath John previously made. When John refused, Santino destroyed his house shortly afterward with a grenade launcher. John eventually agreed to accept Santino's mission to meet his guilt the following day and wants to meet him at a museum. Before he could meet Santino, however, he was detained by Ares and patted down for weapons. She found nothing and let him move on. After John accepted the order to murder Gianna D'Antonio in Rome, Ares followed him to Rome and secretly observed each of his steps.

When John finally strikes the next night and - as suggested by Santino - entered the catacombs to punch through to Gianna, while Ares watched from the shadows. When he returned to the catacombs to escape, he was confronted by Ares and realized that she must have come to remove loose ends. Ares confirmed this in sign language before her henchmen rushed in pick up pursuit of John, who fled into the catacombs. John, however, was prepared and made use of the precautionary weapons stationed in the catacombs, killing Ares' entire team, leaving only her behind. Ares later confronted John at the Rome Continental Hotel, where she was not allowed to kill him due to the hotel's rules. Still, she made motions for "Be seeing you" in sign language, meaning that she promised John she would be the one to kill him.

Hunting the Boogeyman and Death[]

Ares returned to New York, where she apologized to Santino for her failure. Shortly thereafter, Santino held a celebration in his museum to celebrate his ascent to The High Table, but the party was stormed by John, who has come to seek revenge. When Ares was informed, she went to the museum with additional guards to protect Santino and stop Wick. She and her henchmen stormed the "Reflections of the Soul" exhibit of the museum in which Santino entrenched himself. While Ares' team fought Wick, the mute assassin comes up behind Santino, winked at him and led him out of the room to bring him to safety. The two disappeared deeper into the exhibition, but John survived Ares' henchman and resumed the persecution.

Finally, Ares and Santino reach the exit and Ares charged Santino to disappear while she stayed behind to finish things off. She pulled out a knife and rushed back into the hall of mirrors and confronted John, wounding the surprised John with her blade and engaging him in a fight. The fight does not last long and John incapacitates her quickly by stabbing her chest through her hand, but unlike his fight with Cassian, in which John spared the man by tying the blade, John rips the blade out of Ares' heart. While she dies, Ares mockingly signs "be seeing you" at John who sarcastically responded with "sure."

Personality[]

Throughout the events of John Wick: Chapter 2, Ares was built up as a mute figure of looming danger, following John's every move and ordering around squads of Santino's henchmen. She also displayed unfaltering loyalty to Santino at the museum, where she stayed behind to handle John and allow Santino to escape.

Abilities[]

"Go. I'll finish this."
—Ares to Santino D'Antonio[src]
  • Expert Martial Artist: Ares was a skilled fighter, as she challenged John in hand-to-hand combat. However, she proved to be no match to John and was ultimately defeated and left for dead after a rather short fight, stabbed through the chest with her own push dagger.
  • Skilled Knife Combatant: She is skilled with using a push dagger, and can deliver fast jabs and slashes while using the weapon in combat. This can be seen when she fought John Wick in the "Reflections of the Soul" exhibit.
  • Flexibility: Ares can be seen performing fast leg sweeps and rolls during her fight with John, which are feats that require her to be flexible.

Equipment[]

Weapons[]

  • Push Dagger: Ares' weapon of choice was a push dagger. She used it in an attempt to kill John Wick, but she was disarmed and mortally stabbed in her aorta.
  • Smith & Wesson SW1911SC "E-Series": Ares' sidearm was a pistol. She carried it in the catacombs and attached a suppressor to the barrel at the museum.

Trivia[]

  • Ares is never referred by her name in the film. The name is only revealed in the credits to be Ares, though it also appears next to a photograph of her earlier in the film (1:29:30), in the Bowery King's headquarters.
  • In Greek Mythology, Ares is the God of War.
  • Ares was possibly based on the character of Lee Weathers from the 2016 film Morgan as evidenced by their similar appearance.
  • It was rumored that Ruby Rose would have returned as Ares in John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum because her death was not very explicit but this turned out to be wrong. However, we can see the photography of her from John Wick: Chapter 2 in the Bowery King's headquarters in this film.
  • After John fatally stabs Ares, she sits down and signs, "Be seeing you, John." This mirrors the climax of John Wick, where after John fatally stabs Viggo Tarasov, he sits and says the same phrase.
